Resumen
Colombia is a vibrant South American country of 53 million people that has rapidly become one of the most attractive destinations for international students in Latin America. With incredibly affordable living costs, warm and welcoming people, stunning natural diversity — from Caribbean beaches to Andean mountains to Amazon rainforest — and a thriving cultural scene, Colombia offers an immersive study-abroad experience unlike any other. The country has undergone a remarkable transformation in recent decades, shedding its turbulent past to emerge as a dynamic, forward-looking nation with a booming creative economy and growing international student community.
The cost of living is dramatically lower than in Europe or North America, making it possible to live comfortably on €700–1,200/month depending on the city. Colombians are famously friendly and curious about foreigners, and the culture revolves around music, dance, food, and social connection. Spanish is essential for daily life — English proficiency outside universities and tourist areas is limited — but the immersion environment means rapid language acquisition for motivated students.
Sistema educativo
Colombia's higher education system includes both public and private universities. Public institutions like Universidad Nacional de Colombia (the country's top-ranked university) offer high-quality education at very low costs, while prestigious private universities like Universidad de los Andes, Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, and EAFIT are internationally recognized but charge higher tuition.
Three Colombian universities rank among the top 15 in Latin America. Key institutions include Universidad Nacional de Colombia (campuses in Bogotá, Medellín, and other cities), Universidad de los Andes (Bogotá), Universidad de Antioquia (Medellín), Pontificia Universidad Javeriana (Bogotá and Cali), and EAFIT (Medellín). Tuition at public universities runs approximately 2,000,000 COP (~€450) per semester, while private universities range from 2,000,000 to 11,000,000 COP (~€450–2,500) per semester.
The academic calendar typically runs February–June (first semester) and August–December (second semester). Classes are conducted entirely in Spanish at most programs, though some graduate programs and a few undergraduate tracks offer English-taught courses. The tertiary education wage premium in Colombia is 150% — significantly higher than the OECD average — making a Colombian degree valuable in the local job market.
Visado e inmigración
International students need a V-type (Visitor) visa in the student category. Passport holders from visa-exempt countries (including the EU) can study without it as long as their stay does not exceed 180 days. Key requirements:
- Online visa application form and a recent digital photo
- Valid passport with blank pages and at least 6 months validity
- Admission or enrollment certificate from a Colombian institution specifying the program and its duration
- Proof of financial solvency (bank statements showing sufficient funds)
- Health insurance valid in Colombia covering accident, illness, hospitalization and repatriation for your whole stay
- Visa fees for academic programs: USD 16 for the review plus USD 21 for issuance (free for Spanish nationals)
The whole process is online through the Cancillería website, and a decision is issued within up to 30 calendar days. The student visa is valid for up to 2 years (renewable), is cancelled if you leave the country for more than 90 days, and does not count toward permanent residency. Once in Colombia, you must apply to Migración Colombia for a cédula de extranjería (foreign ID card) within 15 calendar days of arrival (fee 294,000 COP in 2026).
Only postgraduate students may work on a student visa, up to 20 hours per week, and the employer must report the job to Migración Colombia and the Ministry of Labour. Visa renewals and changes of status can be done in-country.
Coste de vida
Colombia is one of the most affordable study destinations in the Americas. Monthly costs vary significantly by city — Bogotá and Medellín are the most expensive, while smaller cities like Bucaramanga and Cali offer even lower costs.
Typical monthly budget (mid-range):
- Rent (furnished 1BR apartment): 1,500,000–3,500,000 COP (€340–800)
- Groceries: 600,000–900,000 COP (€135–200)
- Transport: 150,000–300,000 COP (€35–70)
- Dining out: 400,000–700,000 COP (€90–160)
- Utilities + internet: 250,000–450,000 COP (€55–100)
- Mobile phone: 30,000–60,000 COP (€7–14)
- Health insurance: 200,000–400,000 COP (€45–90)
Total realistic range: 3,100,000–6,300,000 COP (€700–1,400/month)
Day-to-day costs are remarkably low: a set lunch (almuerzo corriente or menú del día) costs 14,000–20,000 COP (€3–4.50), a coffee is 3,000–7,000 COP (€0.70–1.60), and a beer at a bar runs 7,000–15,000 COP (€1.50–3.50). Supermarkets (Éxito, Jumbo, D1, Ara) offer affordable groceries, and local markets (plazas de mercado) are even cheaper for fresh produce.
Cultura
Colombian culture is defined by warmth, rhythm, and celebration. Music is everywhere — cumbia, vallenato, salsa, and reggaeton form the soundtrack of daily life, and dancing is not just entertainment but a social language. Festivals are frequent and elaborate, from Barranquilla's Carnival (second largest in the world) to Cali's Feria de Cali to Medellín's Feria de las Flores.
Social life revolves around sharing food, coffee, and conversation. Colombians are famously hospitable and will go out of their way to help visitors. Family ties are strong, and you'll often be invited to gatherings where food is abundant and music is playing. The culture is physically warm — greetings involve cheek kisses, and personal space is smaller than in Northern Europe.
Coffee culture is central to daily life — Colombia produces some of the world's finest coffee, and tinto (black coffee) is offered everywhere. The food varies regionally: bandeja paisa in Medellín, ajiaco in Bogotá, sancocho everywhere, and fresh tropical fruits you've never heard of at every corner.
Sanidad
Colombia's healthcare system ranks 22nd globally by the WHO and offers quality care at affordable prices. The system operates through EPS (Entidades Promotoras de Salud) — health insurance entities that manage access to medical services.
For international students:
- You are required to have health insurance to obtain a student visa
- Private health insurance plans for foreigners cost 200,000–400,000 COP (€45–90) per month
- Popular providers include SURA, Coomeva, and Sanitas
- Private clinics in major cities offer excellent care, often with shorter wait times than public facilities
- Many doctors in Bogotá and Medellín speak English
What's covered:
- General consultations, specialist visits, emergency care, hospitalization, and most medications are included in standard plans
- Dental and vision care may require separate coverage
- Pre-existing conditions may have waiting periods
Pharmacies (droguerías) are abundant and many medications that require prescriptions in Europe are available over-the-counter in Colombia at much lower prices. For emergencies, dial 123 from any phone.
