Resumen

The Universidad Militar Nueva Granada (UMNG) is a public national university linked to the Ministry of Defence. It grew out of the army's higher-education centre and gained university status in 1982. It is open to civilians, who are the large majority of students. Uniformed personnel and their families form a significant community.

UMNG holds institutional multicampus acreditación de alta calidad, renewed in 2022 for eight years (Resolución 013147). The renewal file was due to be filed in July 2026.

SNIES counts 22,092 students for 2025. The university's own 2024–2026 report gives 23,119 students, about 140 programmes and 76,000 graduates.

Rankings:

Oferta académica

UMNG has three main sites:

Engineering is broad: Civil, Industrial, Mechatronics, Multimedia, Telecommunications, Biomedical and Environmental. There are also Medicine, Law, Economics, International Relations, Business Administration, Accounting, Biology and security-related programmes, plus distance programmes. Teaching is in Spanish.

Vida en el campus

Calle 100 sits in a safe, upmarket business district. The Cajicá campus is large, green and modern, with sports fields, labs and a very quiet setting. The culture is more disciplined than at other public universities: there are dress and conduct rules, and there are almost no *paros* (student strikes).

Intercambios

The ORI publishes an inbound exchange call for students from partner universities. You need a home-university agreement and nomination, at least one year of completed study, your transcript, a passport copy, and health insurance valid in Colombia. Partners are in Peru, Chile, Brazil, Argentina, Ecuador, Mexico, Canada, the USA, Spain, France, Italy, Germany, Portugal, Poland, Belgium, Switzerland and the UK. UMNG has no residences, but the ORI suggests housing options. It also offers a free summer course (Industry 4.0) for students from partner universities.

Admisión

Registration costs COP 188,000. You need Saber 11, or an ICFES-validated foreign exam. Depending on the programme there is an interview, psychotechnical tests or knowledge tests. Medicine registration for 2027-1 ran from 24 August to 21 September 2026.

Although UMNG is public, it charges fixed tuition per programme, not by stratum. Examples for 2026, per semester:

Colombians should ask admissions whether the national Gratuidad policy applies to their programme. We could not confirm how coverage works at UMNG.

Foreign degree-seekers need:

Alojamiento

Near Calle 100, rooms in Chicó, Santa Bárbara and Rosales cost about COP 1,100,000–1,600,000 a month (€300–430). Pasadena, Niza and Suba are cheaper at COP 800,000–1,100,000. Cajicá students rent in Cajicá or Chía, where rooms are cheaper than in north Bogotá, and use the Cajicá–Zipaquirá buses.

Empleabilidad

UMNG runs a graduate office and job board. Graduates feed the defence sector, security firms, engineering companies and public administration, and Medicine graduates go on to military hospitals. Information pending on placement rates — contributions welcome.
