Resumen

The Universidad de Los Lagos (ULagos) is a Chilean state university created in 1993 from the former Instituto Profesional de Osorno. Its headquarters are in Osorno. It is part of CRUCH and the state-university network, and takes part in Gratuidad. According to the rector in 2026, it has more than 12,000 students, about 54% of university enrolment in the Los Lagos region, with 3,380 new students in 2026.

The CNA accredited ULagos for 5 years (Avanzada, September 2021–September 2026). In September 2026 it submitted its self-evaluation report for re-accreditation. The peer visit and the new CNA decision are pending, so check the result before relying on the level.

It ranks 83rd in the THE Latin America University Rankings 2026. It does not appear in QS World, and no reliable national position was found.

Oferta académica

Teaching is organised in 13 academic departments rather than faculties. The main areas are:

Medicine opened in Osorno in 2026, with 1,783 applicants for 30 places. The Puerto Montt campus adds Law, Architecture, Psychology, Kinesiology and Chemistry-Pharmacy. There are also technical programmes. The academic year runs March–July and August–December.

Vida en el campus

In Osorno, the main campus is Campus Chuyaca (Av. Fuchslocher 1305), with the central offices on Lord Cochrane. The Puerto Montt campus is on Camino a Chinquihue, where a new CLP 13-billion building for health, engineering and arts is under way. There are further sites in Castro (Chiloé) and Santiago.

Southern Chile is green, rainy and cold in winter. Osorno is a quiet, safe agricultural city close to the volcanoes, lakes and hot springs of the Lakes District, while Puerto Montt is livelier and a gateway to Patagonia.

Intercambios

The international relations office (DRI, rrii@ulagos.cl, Cochrane 1070) receives nominated students from partner universities in Europe (Vilnius via Erasmus+, Beira Interior), Mexico (Colima, Guadalajara, Guanajuato, Querétaro), Peru (UTP) and the US (North Dakota State). It also takes part in OUI programmes.

To apply, send the application form, motivation letter, recommendation and transcript to movilidad.internacional@ulagos.cl. Deadlines are around 10 January for March–July and around 23 June for August–December. After acceptance, you need a passport, health insurance and a student visa.

Admisión

Chileans enter through PAES (DEMRE). For 2027 the test is on 30 November–2 December 2026, with applications on 4–7 January 2027. Foreign degree-seekers should ask admissions about special routes for foreign schooling; details are pending.

Enrolment was free in 2026. Gratuidad covers eligible Chilean and permanent-resident students.

Visiting and degree students need the Residencia Temporal (Estudiantes) from SERMIG, applied for online with apostilled documents. Applications through a CRUCH university are usually processed faster.

Alojamiento

ULagos has no large residence halls. Its student portal lists private rooms. Rooms in Osorno cost about CLP 70,000–220,000 per month (≈ €65–205), among the cheapest in Chile. Puerto Montt is noticeably pricier.

Empleabilidad

The Unidad de Seguimiento de Egresados (USE) runs a job portal (portaltrabajos.ulagos.cl), follows up graduates and organises job fairs in Osorno, Puerto Montt and Chiloé. The main regional employers are education, health, public services and the aquaculture (salmon) industry. Placement statistics are pending — contributions welcome.
