Resumen

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is the world's top-ranked university: it has been No. 1 in the QS World University Rankings for 15 consecutive years (including the 2027 edition) and is also No. 1 among national universities in the U.S. News & World Report 2027 Best Colleges ranking. Founded in 1861 in Boston and located in Cambridge since 1916, MIT has been at the forefront of major technological advances, from radar during the Second World War to modern computing, robotics and biotechnology. The MIT community counts 106 Nobel laureates, along with countless tech industry leaders. About 11,800 students were enrolled in 2025–26, roughly 29% of them international (12% of undergraduates and 41% of graduate students).

MIT's campus stretches along the Charles River in Cambridge, Massachusetts, directly across from Boston. The campus blends iconic modernist architecture (Simmons Hall, Stata Center) with historic buildings along the "Infinite Corridor." Despite its intense academic reputation, MIT cultivates a culture of creativity, collaboration, and irreverent hacker culture. The Boston/Cambridge area provides a rich academic ecosystem shared with Harvard, Tufts, and dozens of other institutions.

Oferta académica

MIT is organised into five schools — Engineering, Science, Architecture and Planning, Humanities/Arts/Social Sciences, and the Sloan School of Management — plus the Schwarzman College of Computing, and offers 56 undergraduate majors. The curriculum is uniquely demanding, with all undergraduates required to complete a rigorous core of mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology regardless of major. Standout areas include computer science and artificial intelligence (home to CSAIL), Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, and Economics. MIT's approach emphasises hands-on problem solving ("mens et manus" — mind and hand), with extensive laboratory work and project-based learning. The MIT OpenCourseWare initiative makes a vast amount of course content freely available online.

Vida en el campus

MIT's culture combines academic intensity with a unique spirit of fun and creativity. The "hacking" tradition (elaborate pranks, not computer hacking) is legendary — a police car once appeared atop the Great Dome, and the Green Building has been turned into a giant game of Tetris. MIT has hundreds of student organisations, from competitive robotics teams to a cappella groups, and more than 60 music, theatre, visual arts, writing and dance groups. The annual Mystery Hunt is a multi-day puzzle competition. Living groups, including fraternities, sororities, and independent living groups, play a significant role in social life. Boston and Cambridge offer rich cultural amenities, sports (Red Sox, Celtics, Patriots), and a lively student social scene in areas like Harvard Square, Central Square and Allston.

Intercambios

MIT's exchange programmes are more limited than many universities. The Cambridge-MIT Exchange with the University of Cambridge ended after the 2016–17 academic year. Today MIT students can join reciprocal exchanges (such as with Imperial College London) or enrol directly at overseas universities, including Oxford, through MIT's study abroad office. MIT's international reach is primarily through research collaborations and the MIT International Science and Technology Initiatives (MISTI), which connects more than 1,200 students a year with internships, research, teaching and study opportunities in more than 40 countries. Incoming students from other universities usually come as visiting or special students attached to a research group rather than through a formal exchange.

Admisión

MIT undergraduate admission is among the most selective in the world: for the Class of 2030 it admitted 1,299 of 28,349 applicants (about 4.6%). Applications are submitted through MIT's own application portal (not the Common App) by 4 January for Regular Action, with Early Action due 1 November; SAT or ACT scores are required, and English proficiency tests are strongly recommended for some non-native speakers. Tuition for 2026–27 is $66,720 for all students, and the full cost of attendance before aid is $92,760. Admission is need-blind for all applicants including international students, and MIT meets 100% of demonstrated financial need; students from families earning under $200,000 a year (with typical assets) attend tuition-free. Graduate admission is handled by each department and is research-focused; requirements such as the GRE and English tests vary by programme. The process emphasises not just academic excellence but creativity, collaboration, and fit with MIT's culture.

Alojamiento

MIT guarantees undergraduate housing for eight consecutive semesters, and all first-year students must live in an on-campus residence hall. There are 20 residence halls, ranging from traditional halls to the architecturally striking Simmons Hall. During orientation, first-years take part in Residential Exploration (REX) to get to know the halls and can request a swap afterwards. Graduate students have access to several graduate residences — for example, a shared two-bedroom apartment cost about $1,650/month at 2024 rates — though housing is not guaranteed and many rent privately in Cambridge, Somerville, or neighbouring areas, where a room in a shared apartment typically costs $1,200–$2,200/month.

Empleabilidad

MIT's Career Advising & Professional Development (CAPD) office provides career advising, events and employer connections, though MIT students often find opportunities through their research networks, faculty connections, and the MIT ecosystem itself. The annual Fall Career Fair drew more than 220 organisations and nearly 4,200 candidates in 2025. MIT's startup culture is extraordinary — a 2015 MIT study estimated that companies founded by living MIT alumni generated revenues comparable to the world's 10th-largest economy. Kendall Square, adjacent to campus, is one of the densest concentrations of biotech and AI companies in the world. Major tech companies and top consulting and finance firms recruit heavily from MIT, and starting salaries for MIT graduates are among the highest of any university.

Intercambio

MIT has no broad inbound exchange scheme; a small number of reciprocal exchanges exist (for example with Imperial College London), and most international visitors come as visiting or special students through research groups.
