Resumen

Harvard University, founded in 1636, is the oldest institution of higher education in the United States and arguably the most recognisable university brand in the world. Located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Harvard ranks 5th in the QS World University Rankings 2027 and 3rd among national universities in the U.S. News & World Report 2027 Best Colleges ranking. With an endowment of about $56.9 billion (June 2025) — the largest of any university — Harvard has exceptional resources for research, financial aid, and institutional development. Around 24,300 degree students were enrolled in autumn 2025, about 28% of them international.

Harvard's campus centres around the iconic Harvard Yard, with red-brick buildings and centuries-old elm trees. The university extends across Cambridge and into Boston's Allston neighbourhood, home to its engineering and applied sciences campus. The broader Boston area provides access to a rich academic ecosystem, world-class hospitals, a vibrant cultural scene, and a thriving tech and biotech industry. In 2025 the federal government tried to revoke Harvard's ability to enrol international students; courts blocked the move and Harvard continues to host international students while the litigation continues.

Oferta académica

Harvard College (undergraduate) offers more than 50 concentrations (majors) within the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. The university's graduate and professional schools include Harvard Law School, Harvard Medical School, Harvard Business School (HBS), the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, and the T.H. Chan School of Public Health. The undergraduate liberal arts curriculum requires students to explore multiple disciplines through the General Education programme. Harvard's tutorial system, small seminar courses, and access to world-renowned faculty create an exceptional learning environment. Cross-registration with MIT allows students to take courses at both institutions.

Vida en el campus

Harvard student life is centred around the residential House system. After first year in and around Harvard Yard, students are assigned to one of 12 upper-level Houses, each with its own dining hall, library, common spaces, and resident tutors. The House system fosters tight-knit communities. Harvard College has more than 500 recognised student organisations, including the Harvard Crimson newspaper, the Hasty Pudding Theatricals, and numerous cultural and political groups. Harvard-Yale "The Game" is the marquee annual event. Cambridge and Boston offer excellent restaurants, bars, museums (Harvard Art Museums, Harvard Museum of Natural History), and entertainment.

Intercambios

Harvard offers international opportunities primarily through its own study abroad programmes for Harvard students. For incoming students there is no broad exchange scheme: undergraduates from other universities can study at Harvard as fee-paying visiting students (in 2026–27, four courses per semester cost $31,113 plus fees) or through Harvard Summer School. The cross-registration agreement with MIT is a unique benefit, effectively doubling course availability. Graduate-level exchanges are handled by individual schools, with HBS and HKS having particularly active international components.

Admisión

Harvard is one of the most selective universities in the world: for the Class of 2029 it admitted 2,003 of 47,893 applicants (about 4.2%). Harvard no longer publishes figures at decision time; Class of 2030 statistics are due in autumn 2026. Applications are submitted through the Common Application by 1 January, with Restrictive Early Action by 1 November, and SAT or ACT scores are required (in exceptional cases, AP, IB, A-Level or national exam results may be accepted). Tuition for 2026–27 is $62,226 for all students, and total billed costs including fees, housing and food are $91,634, plus health insurance of $4,954 unless waived. Harvard is need-blind and meets 100% of demonstrated need for all admitted students, including international students: families earning $100,000 or less pay nothing, and families earning up to $200,000 pay no tuition (with typical assets). Graduate admission varies by school and is highly competitive; most PhD programmes are fully funded. Strong academic records, extracurricular leadership, and compelling personal narratives are essential.

Alojamiento

Undergraduates live on campus: first-years live in and around Harvard Yard — a coveted and iconic experience — and upper-level students live in the Houses, many along the Charles River, with suite-style living and extensive amenities. College housing costs $14,250 and food $8,942 for 2026–27. Graduate housing is available through Harvard University Housing but not guaranteed; many graduate students rent in Cambridge, Somerville, or Boston, where a room in a shared apartment typically costs $1,200–$2,200/month.

Empleabilidad

Harvard's Mignone Center for Career Success (formerly the Office of Career Services) provides advising, career fairs, alumni networking, and on-campus recruiting for College, graduate and Extension School students. The Harvard name opens doors globally — alumni networks span every industry and country. Employers recruiting at Harvard include leading consulting firms, investment banks, technology companies, and major law firms. Harvard Business School and Harvard Law School run their own career offices with strong placement records. The i-lab (Innovation Lab) supports student entrepreneurs with workspace, mentorship, and funding. Harvard graduates are among the best-paid of any university.

Intercambio

Harvard has no broad inbound exchange scheme; visiting undergraduates can enrol through the fee-paying Visiting Undergraduate Students programme or Harvard Summer School, graduate exchanges are run by individual schools, and Harvard students can cross-register at MIT.
