Resumen
The Universidad Autónoma del Beni "José Ballivián" (UAB or UABJB) was created on 18 November 1967 by Law 352. It began as the Universidad Técnica del Beni with a single carrera, Ingeniería Zootécnica, and adopted its current name in 2005. It is the public autonomous university of the Beni department and a CEUB member, and it celebrated its 58th anniversary in November 2025.
The university's pregrado office describes 8 faculties, 25 licenciatura carreras plus technician programmes, and "more than 15,000 students a year" across Trinidad and all eight Beni provinces. A December 2025 local press estimate was lower, at "more than 10,000", so treat 15,000 as the institutional upper figure. UABJB appears in the QS Latin America & the Caribbean 2026 ranking only in the open "401+" band. There is no published share of foreign students.
Oferta académica
Faculties: Ingeniería y Tecnología (Systems, Civil, Automotive Mechanical); Ciencias de la Salud (Medicine in Trinidad and Guayaramerín, Nursing, Pharmacy and Biochemistry); Ciencias Agrícolas; Ciencias Pecuarias (Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science); Ciencias Forestales; Ciencias Económicas; Ciencias Jurídicas, Políticas y Sociales (Law, Communication); and Humanidades y Ciencias de la Educación (Education, Tourism). Many carreras also run in Riberalta, Guayaramerín and San Borja. The livestock, veterinary and forestry programmes fit the Beni's cattle-ranching and forest economy, and Medicine is the most sought-after carrera. The university says all carreras have been self-evaluated and the oldest accredited within the Bolivian university system.
Fees: matrícula is paid by QR or at the central cashier, but UABJB does not publish amounts for nationals or foreigners online. Both tuition fields are left null until a current tariff is found.
Vida en el campus
The central offices are in the Edificio Antonio Vaca Díez, Av. 6 de Agosto No. 61, in central Trinidad. Faculties are spread around the city. Trinidad is a lowland Amazonian town at under 200 m: hot and humid most of the year, with a rainy season from roughly November to April that brings seasonal flooding. People get around mostly by motorcycle and mototaxi rather than bus. It is the opposite of the altiplano universities, and life is slower and cheaper.
Intercambios
There is no public inbound exchange programme or dedicated international office page. Admisión especial lists a movilidad estudiantil route, and foreign students on government scholarships must bring an accreditation letter from their consulate or foreign ministry. Information pending on active partner universities — contributions welcome.
Admisión
New students enter by PSA (in person or virtual; question bank published online), curso preuniversitario, the curso propedéutico for Medicine (annual intake), or admisión especial (excellence, professionals, disability, mobility). Registration starts with an online pre-registration form on moxos.uabjb.edu.bo.
Foreign applicants face notably strict requirements: a criminal record certificate, proof of Spanish (a certificate from a ministry-recognised institute or an exam), a secondary diploma legalised by SEDUCA, a consular-legalised birth certificate, a student visa or DIGEMIG carnet de extranjero, and lab tests (ELISA for HIV, TB, VDRL, and a pregnancy test for women). The 60-day student visa must be converted into a DIGEMIG permanencia temporal de estudiante (1–3 years). The university's Trámites office also handles revalidation of foreign degrees.
Alojamiento
There are no dorms. Students rent rooms from families or small alojamientos near the centre. Information pending on reliable rent figures — contributions welcome. A fan or air-conditioning and mosquito screens matter more than heating here.
Empleabilidad
Information pending — contributions welcome. Graduates mainly go into regional health services, the public sector and the Beni's agricultural and livestock economy.
