Resumen

The Universidad Amazónica de Pando (UAP) is the public autonomous university of Pando, Bolivia's northernmost department, and a CEUB member. It was created legally in 1984 (Decreto Supremo 20511 and Law 653) but only began teaching on 3 December 1993, with Biology and Nursing. This page treats the 1984 legal creation as the founding date. The university has since grown to around 16 licenciatura carreras on its Cobija campus plus rural units in Pando.

What makes UAP unusual is its location. Cobija sits on the Acre River opposite the Brazilian towns of Brasiléia and Epitaciolândia, and a 2025 academic study describes a daily flow of Brazilian students crossing the bridge to study there, to the point that Cobija's universities have adapted to a largely Portuguese-speaking student body. No official enrolment or foreign-share figure is published. The "65,412 matriculados" counter on the UAP homepage appears to be cumulative and is not used here. UAP does not appear in QS, THE or other major rankings.

Oferta académica

The carreras listed at UAP's latest graduation ceremony were Medicine, Nursing, Environmental Engineering, Agroforestry, Biology, Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science, Accounting, Business Administration, Commercial Engineering, Sustainable Tourism, Systems Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Law and Social Work. Architecture, a technician-level English programme and customs management are also offered. Research leans toward Amazonian ecology, forestry and borderland governance. Medicine is the magnet for Brazilians, and Brazilian media report a UAP Medicine unit at Puerto Evo Morales, facing Plácido de Castro (Acre).

Fees. UAP does not publish its tariffs online. Brazilian outlets quote about Bs 11,000–12,000 per year for Medicine for foreigners, but that figure comes from a private agency's advertisement and is not official. What is documented is that in 2025 UAP raised the diploma fee for foreign licenciatura graduates from Bs 14,115 to Bs 33,000, citing the exchange rate. Foreign students have complained about differential charges since at least 2018. Get every fee in writing from the university itself, not an intermediary.

Vida en el campus

The campus is on Av. Las Palmas in Cobija, a small, hot and humid border town at under 300 m in the Amazon lowlands, with a duty-free commercial zone. Much of daily life crosses the border: students live, shop or eat in Brasiléia, and Portuguese is heard as much as Spanish. Getting to the rest of Bolivia mostly means flying to La Paz or Trinidad.

Intercambios

No formal inbound exchange office or programme was found. International presence at UAP is overwhelmingly Brazilian degree-seekers, not exchange students. Information pending on agreements with Brazilian federal universities — contributions welcome.

Admisión

Information pending on UAP's official admission modality (PSA, pre-university course or direct entry) and its calendar — contributions welcome. Brazilian agencies advertise "no entrance exam", but confirm this with the university. Foreign degree-seekers need a legalised or apostilled secondary diploma and birth certificate, and they must convert the Bolivian student visa into a DIGEMIG permanencia temporal de estudiante (1–3 years). Brazilians heading home should check degree recognition in Brazil (Revalida for Medicine) before enrolling.

Alojamiento

There are no residences. Rooms in Cobija, and often across the border in Brasiléia, are rented privately. Information pending on reliable rent figures — contributions welcome.

Empleabilidad

Information pending — contributions welcome. Local employers are the regional health network, public administration and the Brazil nut, timber and cross-border trade economy.
