Resumen
Stanford University, founded by Leland and Jane Stanford in 1885 and opened in 1891, sits on more than 8,300 acres in the heart of Silicon Valley, California. It is one of the world's most prestigious and selective universities, ranked joint 2nd in the QS World University Rankings 2027 and joint 5th among national universities in the U.S. News & World Report 2027 Best Colleges ranking. Stanford's entrepreneurial DNA has shaped the modern technology industry — alumni and faculty have founded companies including Google, HP, Nike, Netflix, Instagram, Snapchat, and thousands more. In autumn 2025 it enrolled 7,289 undergraduates and 10,025 graduate students; about 13% of undergraduates and 35% of graduate students are international.
The campus, with its distinctive sandstone buildings, red-tile roofs, and palm-lined paths, enjoys a sunny Mediterranean climate. The surrounding area includes Palo Alto, one of the most expensive places to live in the US, and provides direct access to Silicon Valley's tech ecosystem. San Francisco is about 35 miles (55 km) north.
Oferta académica
Stanford offers programmes through seven schools: Engineering, Humanities & Sciences, Business, Law, Medicine, Education, and the Doerr School of Sustainability. The Computer Science programme is among the world's best, and Stanford's influence on AI and machine learning research is enormous. The engineering school is consistently top-ranked, and the Graduate School of Business (GSB) is among the most selective business schools globally. Stanford's academic culture emphasises interdisciplinary collaboration, innovation, and entrepreneurship. The quarter system (rather than semesters) allows students to take more courses but at a faster pace.
Vida en el campus
Stanford's campus is essentially a self-contained village. Student life revolves around the Main Quad and the sprawling campus, best navigated by bicycle. The university has close to 600 recognised student organisations, including around 28 fraternities and sororities, and a nationally competitive Division I athletics programme (the Cardinal). Annual traditions include Full Moon on the Quad, Big Game against Cal-Berkeley, and Admit Weekend. Despite its academic intensity, the sunny California lifestyle promotes outdoor activities — students surf at Half Moon Bay, hike in the nearby hills, and enjoy the food scenes in Palo Alto and San Francisco. Nightlife is limited on campus; most students head to San Francisco for clubs and bars.
Intercambios
Stanford's international programmes are distinctive. Rather than traditional exchanges, Stanford operates the Bing Overseas Studies Program (BOSP), with quarter-length Stanford programmes in Berlin, Beijing (pilot), Cape Town, Florence, Kyoto, Madrid, New York, Oxford, Paris, and Santiago, plus partnership programmes at The Chinese University of Hong Kong and The University of Queensland. Courses are taught by Stanford faculty in residence and local academics, and roughly half of each graduating class studies away through BOSP. Incoming exchange opportunities are limited to select bilateral agreements with a small number of international partners. Stanford Summer Session is open to visiting students from other universities.
Admisión
Stanford is one of the most selective universities in the world: for the Class of 2029 it admitted 2,302 of 60,646 applicants (about 3.8%); Stanford does not publish figures at decision time. Applications are submitted through the Common Application by 5 January for Regular Decision, with Restrictive Early Action due 1 November, and SAT or ACT scores are required again from fall 2026 entry. Tuition for 2026–27 is $67,731 for all students ($22,577 per quarter), and the estimated total budget including housing, food and fees is $97,545. Stanford is need-blind for US citizens and permanent residents and meets 100% of demonstrated need for all admitted students; families earning under $150,000 with typical assets pay no tuition, and under $100,000 no tuition, room or board. For international applicants admission is need-aware: requesting aid is a factor in the decision, and international students who do not request aid when applying cannot apply for it later. Graduate admission varies by programme; the GSB is among the most selective business schools, and PhD programmes are research-focused.
Alojamiento
Stanford guarantees undergraduate housing for all four years, a significant advantage given Bay Area housing costs; the 2026–27 budget for undergraduate housing and food is $22,944. On-campus options include traditional dorms, co-ops, and themed houses (e.g., language houses, ethnic communities). Graduate students have access to university apartments priced below local rents — from about $1,200 to $3,000 per person per month in 2026–27, including utilities — though demand exceeds supply. Off-campus rentals in Palo Alto and surrounding areas are extremely expensive — a room in a shared house costs $1,500–$2,500/month. The free Marguerite shuttle connects campus to Caltrain and nearby transit centres.
Empleabilidad
Stanford's BEAM (Bridging Education, Ambition, and Meaningful Work) career centre provides comprehensive support, but Stanford students' greatest career asset is the network itself. Proximity to Silicon Valley means constant exposure to tech companies, venture capital, and startup culture. Stanford's entrepreneurial ecosystem includes the d.school (Hasso Plattner Institute of Design), StartX accelerator, and Stanford Technology Ventures Program. Employers recruiting on campus include the major tech companies, leading consulting and finance firms, and countless startups. Many students start companies during or immediately after their studies.
