Overview

The Universidad de Los Hemisferios (UHE) is a small private Catholic university in Quito. It was created by Ley 36 in May 2004 and opened in October 2004 with 70 founding students. Its spiritual orientation is entrusted to Opus Dei. The campus is in Iñaquito Alto (Paseo de la Universidad 300 y Juan Díaz), on the hillside above north-central Quito's La Carolina business district. Its business school, IDE Business School, has premises on Nicolás López and Marco Aguirre in Quito and a Guayaquil site opened in 2024 (km 13 Vía a la Costa).

UHE is accredited by CACES (Resolution 146-SE-33-CACES-2020), extended by Resolution 216-SO-29-CACES-2025. The university is preparing for the next evaluation. In Webometrics July 2026 it ranks 55th in Ecuador and 8,361st worldwide; it does not appear in QS tables. The 2025 accountability report counts 4,761 students across undergraduate, postgraduate and IDE programmes. Undergraduate enrolment in the 2025-2 term was 1,137.

Academic programs

Faculties cover Education; Engineering; Health Sciences; Legal and Political Sciences and International Relations; the International Faculty of Communication and Cultural Industries; and the International Faculty of Economic and Administrative Sciences. Undergraduate careers include:

Fees (2025): matrícula USD 175 per term, then USD 108.50 per credit for most careers. Dentistry costs USD 208.50 per credit and Nursing USD 50 per credit, and English modules cost USD 260. Because the price is per credit, no single tuition figure is given here. Multiply the credits in your plan to estimate the full cost.

Campus life

With roughly 1,100 undergraduates, the campus is compact and personal: small classes, Catholic chaplaincy and cultural activities fed by the Music and Gastronomy careers. It suits students who want close supervision rather than a large-campus scene. Quito's La Carolina, La Floresta and Mariscal nightlife are 10-20 minutes away by taxi.

Exchange programs

UHE reports more than 20 agreements in 14 countries. The flagship is the Universidad de Navarra agreement, renewed in 2025, with exchanges in Communication, Law, International Relations, Economics and Administration. New agreements in 2025 include Universidad Maimónides and Universidad Nacional de Tucumán (Argentina), Universidad José Cecilio del Valle (Honduras) and PUCE Ambato. Incoming numbers are tiny: two students from Ircom (France) in 2025. Expect personal attention but little exchange infrastructure.

Admissions

Admission is direct, as at all private universities: the Terman aptitude test (minimum 85/121), an interview with the dean, then enrolment. Depending on the career, programmes start in January, March or September. Foreigners must homologate their secondary diploma with the Ministerio de Educación (apostilled and translated). For long stays, obtain the student temporary residence visa via Cancillería's e-VISAS with a passport, an apostilled criminal record, proof of means and an admission letter.

Student housing

There are no residences. Students rent rooms or suites in Iñaquito, La Concepción, La Carolina or El Batán. Information pending on verified local rent ranges near Iñaquito Alto — contributions welcome. As a reference, student rooms near Universidad Central in central-north Quito list at USD 120-180/month (≈ €100-155).

Career services

Pre-professional internships are compulsory, and IDE Business School gives the university strong ties to Quito's corporate sector. Information pending on a central careers office and employability data — contributions welcome.
