Your First 30 Days in Spain as an International Student: TIE, Empadronamiento, Bank and SIM
Published on · 9 min read

Your first-month checklist in Spain: register at the town hall, apply for the TIE on time, open a bank account and activate your SIM. What to do each week, in what order and with which documents.
No corre prisa.
Semanas 3 y 4: universidad, transporte, sanidad y firma digital
Universidad.
Semana 2: cuenta bancaria y cita TIE confirmada.

Title: Your First 30 Days in Spain as an International Student: TIE, Empadronamiento, Bank and SIM (2026)
Meta description: Your first-month checklist in Spain: register at the town hall, apply for the TIE on time, open a bank account and activate your SIM. What to do each week, in what order and with which documents.
Your First 30 Days in Spain as an International Student: TIE, Empadronamiento, Bank and SIM
You have the visa and the ticket. Your first month in Spain is a list of chained tasks, and this is the complete version:
Get a Spanish SIM.
Register at the town hall (empadronamiento), if you already have stable accommodation.
Book the appointment and apply for the TIE within the first month from your entry, if your stay exceeds six months.
Open a bank account.
Complete your university procedures: enrolment, documentation and university card.
Request the transport card of your autonomous community.
Activate your healthcare access, if it applies to you.
Get a digital certificate or Cl@ve to do procedures online.
In this guide we explain each one, with which documents and in the order that usually fits best.
Verified in July 2026.
Before we start, the necessary vocabulary
NIE: your Foreigner Identity Number. It is the personal number that identifies you before the Spanish Administration, it usually already appears on your study visa and it will stay the same throughout your entire relationship with Spain.
TIE: the Foreigner Identity Card, the physical document that proves your NIE and your authorisation, with your photo and its expiry date. The card is what you will be processing this month. Forms will ask for your NIE (the number) and counters for your TIE (the card).
Empadronamiento: your registration in the residents' register of the municipality where you live. It is done at the town hall, and as proof they can issue you a volante (free) or a certificado de empadronamiento (it usually costs one or two euros and offers greater reliability), depending on the procedure you need it for.
Digital certificate and Cl@ve: the two electronic identification systems before the Spanish Administration. They let you complete procedures online without showing up in person.
Return authorisation: the permit you need to leave and re-enter Spain if your visa is already used up and your TIE is being produced. You will see it in the FAQ.
An order that saves time (not a law)
Arrival procedures tend to chain together: the empadronamiento is usually requested for the TIE, and the NIE on your visa opens the bank's door.
The order in this guide is the one that usually saves the most time in most cities, although some requirements may vary depending on the immigration office or the bank. Two real examples: some police stations do not require the empadronamiento for the TIE, and some banks let you open an account with just your passport, visa and NIE.
So use the sequence as a guide, not as a rule, and confirm the requirements of your specific office and bank.
Before flying: the right carry-on
Ten minutes of preparation worth a whole month. Carry with you, not checked in: your passport with the visa, your authorisation resolution, the admission letter, the insurance policy, your accommodation contract or letter, two or three passport-size photos with a white background and digital copies of everything.
And one strategic move: book your TIE appointment as soon as possible. In some provinces availability is limited and getting an appointment can take several weeks, so as soon as you have an address in Spain try the official immigration appointment portal.
Week 1: SIM and empadronamiento
The SIM comes first, because everything else asks for a phone. A prepaid one activates at any operator with just your passport, in ten minutes and from a few euros a month. The permanent contract, with better rates, will come once you have a bank account. No rush.
The empadronamiento is your registration as a resident, and you do it as soon as you have stable accommodation. It is processed at the town hall (search for cita previa padrón on your city's website) and it only requires your passport and proof of where you live: a rental contract or, if you live in a room or residence hall, a signed authorisation from the holder.
You leave the procedure with your proof: the town hall can issue a volante or a certificado de empadronamiento, depending on the procedure you need it for. Keep it safe, because it is the key to half of your future paperwork, from the TIE to healthcare.
Weeks 2 and 3: the TIE, the star procedure of the month
If your stay authorisation exceeds six months, you must apply for the TIE within the first month from your entry into Spain, as stated on the official page of the student regime. It is the formulation the authorities themselves use, and the only truly critical date of the month.
On appointment day, at the police station or immigration office assigned to you, the file is a closed list: form EX-17, fee 790-012 paid, photo, passport, your resolution and your proof of empadronamiento (some offices do not require it, but bring it anyway). The fee is usually around €16, although it is updated periodically. It is downloaded from the National Police electronic office and paid at a bank before the appointment.
The appointment itself takes minutes: they verify your documents and take your fingerprints. You leave with a receipt that, together with your passport, proves your status while the card is being produced. You will collect it a few weeks later, usually between 30 and 45 days, in a second visit with that same receipt.
→ With Uniwords: the Arrival Kit solves this block for you. We find and book your appointment, prepare the complete file (EX-17, fee paid, documentation reviewed) and accompany you on fingerprint day. Your only task is showing up. Book here
Week 2: bank account
With your passport, visa and NIE, several banks, traditional and digital, open student accounts with no fees. Others will ask for the physical TIE, so if your preferred bank is one of the latter, the account waits until week 4.
A useful fact if you applied for your authorisation from Spain: while the application is being processed you are considered in legal status, which already lets you open the account.
Compare three things before signing: maintenance fees, the cost of international transfers (that is where a student's money goes) and exactly which document they accept.
Weeks 3 and 4: university, transport, healthcare and digital signature
University. There is more here than it seems: complete your final enrolment if it was conditional on your arrival, hand in any original documentation they request, collect your university card and activate your institutional email. It is the door to discounts, libraries and free software that is rarely advertised!
Transport. All major cities have monthly passes with a heavily reduced youth rate. They are processed online or at the transport consortium offices of your autonomous community with your passport or NIE and a photo. Do it this week: it pays for itself from the first ride.
Healthcare. If you are from the EU, your European Health Insurance Card gives you access to public healthcare when applicable, although it is worth checking that it covers the full duration of your stay. If you come with your visa's private insurance, you normally don't need to do anything else: download its app, locate its medical network and save its emergency phone number. And one conditional case: if you start working, do paid internships or public coverage applies to you through an agreement, you will need to register with Social Security. For emergencies, the single European number is 112, with or without insurance.
Digital certificate or Cl@ve. Probably the step that will save you the most time from now on: it will let you complete numerous procedures with the Administration online, check your files and download certificates without showing up in person. You can activate Cl@ve or request the FNMT digital certificate, and many universities recommend it from the first month.
The month at a glance
Before flying: documents in your carry-on and a TIE appointment attempt.
Day 1 or 2: prepaid SIM.
Week 1: empadronamiento, proof in hand.
Week 2: bank account and TIE appointment confirmed.
Week 3: TIE fingerprints, receipt in hand, and transport pass.
Week 4: enrolment and university card, healthcare access if it applies, digital certificate or Cl@ve and permanent phone contract.
Day 30 to 45: TIE collection. End of paperwork, the real course begins.
Three veteran tips
The appointment rules over the calendar. Everything else in this guide is flexible, the immigration diary is not. Chase it from day one and keep dated screenshots of your attempts if there are no slots: it is the standard practice to prove diligence.
Pay the fee before the appointment, not on the same day. Arriving with the 790-012 unpaid is the silliest reason to lose a hard-won appointment.
Always ask for two copies of your proof of empadronamiento. You will be asked for it more times than you imagine. The volante is usually enough, but some procedures require the certificado and want it less than three months old.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between NIE and TIE?
The NIE is your personal identification number before the Administration, it usually already appears on your study visa and it does not change. The TIE is the physical card that proves it and expires with your authorisation. Forms will ask for your NIE (the number) and counters for your TIE (the card).
I am an EU citizen, what applies to me?
No visa and no TIE: your procedure is registering with the authorities within the first 90 days to obtain the Certificate of Registration as a Union Citizen (Certificado de Registro de Ciudadano de la Unión), in which your assigned NIE normally appears and which is valid for 5 years. Your European Health Insurance Card covers public healthcare when applicable. The empadronamiento, the bank account and the SIM work the same as for everyone.
What if there are no TIE appointments available within the month?
It is a known problem in the big cities. Keep trying at different times (diaries are reloaded), widen your search to other offices in your province on the portal https://icp.administracionelectronica.gob.es and document every attempt with dated screenshots. The legal obligation is to apply on time, and proven diligence is your backup.
Can I leave Spain while waiting for the card?
Within the Schengen area, with your passport and a valid visa, yes. If your visa is already used up and the TIE is being produced, to leave and re-enter you need a return authorisation, requested at the immigration office or police station with an appointment, the TIE receipt and its own fee. Plan your end-of-year trips with this in mind!
Can I open a bank account with just my passport?
At several banks yes, especially digital ones and with non-resident or student accounts. Others accept passport, visa and NIE, and others require the physical TIE. If you applied for your authorisation from Spain, the proof of application in process already certifies legal status to open one.
How much does this month of paperwork cost?
Very little, compared to the visa: the volante de empadronamiento is free (the certificado, one or two euros), the TIE fee is usually around €16 although it is updated periodically, plus photos and transport. The bulk of the immigration spending (insurance, translations, consular fees) is already behind you. The full first-year budget is at https://uniwordstudents.com/blog/cuanto-cuesta-estudiar-en-espana
