How to work as a student abroad

Discover how to work as a student abroad. Learn about visas, real-life tips, and platforms to find a job without getting lost in the process.

Finding a job while studying abroad can seem challenging, but with the right tips and a bit of strategy, it’s completely possible. Beyond the money, having a job connects you with local life, improves your language skills, and opens new doors.

At Uniwords, we tell it like it is, with real stories from students like you.

Can you work as a student abroad?

Yes. In many countries such as Spain, Germany, Canada or Australia, student visas allow you to work under certain conditions:

  • Spain: you can work up to 20 hours per week during term time if you have a NIE and a contract compatible with your studies. During holidays, you can work full-time.

  • Canada: similar limits apply, and you may even be able to work on campus.

Make sure your visa allows it and that your employer handles the paperwork correctly.

Real tip: many students in Madrid or Barcelona found their first jobs in cafés, language schools, or babysitting for local families.

Practical tips that actually work

Many jobs don’t require previous experience, but your attitude makes all the difference. Here are some tips that have worked for Uniwords students:

  • Prepare a clear, visual CV in Spanish or English (Canva is great if you don’t know where to start)

  • Sign up to useful platforms like InfoJobs, StudentJob, Domestika (for creative jobs) or Indeed

  • Use LinkedIn search, set alerts, and contact alumni from your university

  • Attend job fairs organised by your university

  • Improve your Spanish level. With a B1, you can already apply for customer service or sales roles

In Valencia, a Uniwords ambassador got a job as an English-speaking activity leader thanks to a poster at their faculty. In Portugal, another student started working as a waiter on a terrace after simply asking in person.

How Uniwords helps you

On Uniwords, besides sharing real experiences from students already working, you can talk directly with ambassadors who have been through the same process.

They can tell you:

  • Where they found their first jobs

  • What mistakes to avoid

  • What it’s really like to balance study and work
