How to use ChatGPT to find accommodation in Spain

ChatGPT prompts for finding accommodation (and how to verify what you find)

Are you looking for a flat in Spain and don’t know where to start? Using ChatGPT to find accommodation in Spain is a good first step, but be careful: not everything it suggests is reliable. That’s why, in addition to using artificial intelligence, it’s best to validate every piece of information with other students in the Uniwords community or in our city-based forum.

What is a prompt and how does it help you find a flat?

A prompt is basically the instruction you give to AI to help you.

Here are some practical prompts to use ChatGPT to find accommodation in Spain. Remember: the more specific you are, the better the response.

Prompt 1: Recommended neighbourhoods based on your profile

"Act as an international student who has been living in [city] for 2 years. Recommend the best neighbourhoods to live in if I am a student, have a budget of [XXX]€ per month, value tranquillity and want to be no more than [XX] minutes from [university name]. Also explain the pros and cons of each neighbourhood based on real experience."

Prompt 2: Real price comparison

"Give me an updated table with average room prices in student areas of Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia. Include neighbourhood, estimated price, most common type of housing (shared flat, residence, etc.), and whether bills are usually included. Use 2024 data and update it according to post-pandemic trends."

Prompt 3: Safety and rental legality

"Explain how to avoid scams when renting a flat in Spain as an international student. Include 5 specific red flags, advice on secure payments, and the most reliable platforms. Assume I have never rented before."

Prompt 4: Simulated contract review

"I am a student in Barcelona and I am about to sign a rental contract. The landlord sent it to me in Catalan. Act as a lawyer specialised in student housing. Make a checklist of the most important clauses I should carefully check before signing, and tell me how to politely request a Spanish version."

Prompt 5: Complete renting checklist

"Create a complete step-by-step checklist of everything I need to rent a flat legally in Spain as an international student. Include documents, appointments, recommended platforms and practical advice from experience."

Prompt 6: Message to a landlord

"Write a formal but friendly message to contact a landlord on Idealista. My name is [your name], I am an international student, I am arriving in [city] in September and I am interested in their listing. I would like to request a video call to see the flat before booking."

What ChatGPT doesn’t know (and why you need the community)

You can use ChatGPT to find accommodation or get a general overview, but:

• Prices may be outdated

• It cannot verify whether an agency is trustworthy

• It doesn’t know real-life tricks to find a flat quickly (like asking in university associations or checking student café noticeboards)

• It cannot review your contract or tell you if an area is safe at night

That’s what the Uniwords community is for. You can ask in the city forum if someone has already lived in that neighbourhood, had experience with an agency, or even get your contract checked. Real experience cannot be replaced by any bot.

Final tip: AI + community = the winning combo

The ideal formula is:

• Use ChatGPT to find accommodation with prompts like the ones above

• Save what you find and share it on Uniwords so other students can validate it. Sign up here to access the community as a Rookie or Ambassador

• Ask live questions: “Has anyone used Aluni or Spotahome?”, “Is this area noisy?”

• Use Uwies: the more you help or ask, the more rewards you earn
