Resumen

The University of Cambridge, founded in 1209, is the fourth-oldest university in the world and one of its most prestigious academic institutions. It is ranked 6th in the world in the QS World University Rankings 2027 and 1st in the UK in the Complete University Guide 2027. Like Oxford, it operates through a collegiate system with 31 colleges, each an independent community of scholars. Among its alumni and affiliates are 126 Nobel Prize laureates, and it has been at the forefront of discoveries from Newton's laws of motion to the structure of DNA.

Cambridge has nearly 25,000 students (12,850 undergraduates and 12,080 postgraduates in 2025-26), including around 9,000 international students from over 140 countries — about 25% of undergraduates and 55% of postgraduates. It is a compact, bicycle-friendly city where the university dominates the landscape. The River Cam, King's College Chapel, and the Backs provide an iconic backdrop. The city blends centuries of academic tradition with a thriving modern tech ecosystem known as "Silicon Fen," home to over 5,000 knowledge-intensive companies.

Oferta académica

Cambridge excels across sciences, engineering, humanities, and social sciences. Its Natural Sciences Tripos is uniquely flexible, allowing students to combine subjects. The Computer Science programme has produced numerous tech pioneers. The Judge Business School offers world-class MBA and finance programmes. Supervision-based teaching (Cambridge's equivalent of Oxford's tutorials) ensures close academic mentorship in very small groups. The academic year consists of three eight-week terms: Michaelmas, Lent and Easter.

Vida en el campus

College life forms the heart of the Cambridge experience. Each college has its own dining hall (formal halls with gowns are a cherished tradition), bar, sports teams, and societies. Punting on the Cam is a quintessential activity. The university has hundreds of student societies, from the Cambridge Union to the Footlights (famous comedy troupe). May Week — actually in June — features garden parties and May Balls, elaborate black-tie events. Cycling is the primary mode of transport, and the compact city centre is easily walkable.

Intercambios

Cambridge only accepts exchange students, including those coming under Erasmus, from institutions with which it has a current exchange agreement in the relevant subject area. Students must be nominated by their home exchange coordinator (by 31 March for October entry, with applications completed by 30 April) and can only take courses from the framework for their subject; frameworks exist for Modern and Medieval Languages, English, Law and History and Modern Languages, the latter with partners such as Universität Wien, Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, ENS Lyon, Universitat de València and Universidad de Zaragoza. Non-native speakers take a university English assessment unless they hold, for example, IELTS 7.5 with 7.0 in each element. Exchange students are not charged Cambridge fees but should budget around £11,000 a year for living costs.

Admisión

For 2027 entry, undergraduate applications are submitted through UCAS by 6pm UK time on 15 October 2026, followed by the My Cambridge Application form by 22 October. Some courses require pre-registered tests sat on 12–16 October 2026 (ESAT for Engineering, Natural Sciences, Chemical Engineering and Veterinary Medicine; TMUA for Computer Science, Economics and Mathematics), while others use college assessments at interview. Most interviews take place in the first three weeks of December, with decisions on 27 January 2027. In 2025, 22,513 people applied for around 4,890 undergraduate places, though competition varies significantly by subject. International students need top grades and strong English proficiency (normally IELTS Academic 7.5 with 7.0 in each element). For 2027 entry, Home students pay £10,050 a year, while international tuition ranges from £30,798 (most arts, humanities and social sciences) to £46,872 (sciences and engineering) and £70,554 (Medicine and Veterinary Medicine), plus an annual college fee of roughly £12,500–£15,950. Graduate admissions are handled by departments, with deadlines varying by programme.

Alojamiento

Most students live in one of the colleges for the duration of their course. Room quality ranges from historic sets in medieval courts to modern en-suite rooms, and prices vary by college. College contracts are shorter than a full year (minimum lengths of 27 to 39 weeks in 2025-26), so you don't pay rent over the whole summer. The university estimates accommodation at about £880 per month and total living costs at about £1,330 per month for 2027-28. Graduates often live in college or university-owned accommodation, or rent privately in areas like Chesterton, Romsey Town, or Mill Road.

Empleabilidad

The Cambridge University Careers Service provides extensive support including one-on-one coaching, skills workshops, and employer networking events. Cambridge graduates are highly sought after globally: 92% of working graduates are in high-skilled employment, according to the Graduate Outcomes Survey 2023-24. There are strong pipelines into tech, consulting, finance, academia, medicine, and public policy. The university's position at the heart of the Silicon Fen cluster, the birthplace of 26 businesses valued at over $1 billion, offers unique opportunities in AI, biotech, and deep tech startups. The Enterprise ecosystem supports student entrepreneurs through competitions, incubators, and seed funding.
