Resumen

The Universidad Nacional de Educación (UNAE) is Ecuador's national teacher-training university, created by a law approved in late 2013 as one of four flagship universities of that period. The first 19 students began a foundation course in 2014. It is a specialist institution: every undergraduate degree is a Licenciatura in Education, aimed at rebuilding the country's public-school teaching workforce. UNAE is CACES-accredited (resolution 156-SO-30-CACES-2024) and ranks 45th in Ecuador and 7,291st worldwide in Webometrics July 2026; it does not appear in QS or THE.

The most recent official enrolment figure found is 6,832 active students in 2021, split between on-campus, distance and in-service teacher programmes; no current total has been published, so the student count is left empty here.

The campus is at Chuquipata (parroquia Javier Loyola), Panamericana Norte km 8 — a purpose-built 44 ha site about 15 minutes from Azogues and 20 minutes from Cuenca. Azogues is a small, calm provincial capital (Cañar) at about 2,500 m with a mild, spring-like climate. Many students live in Cuenca, a UNESCO World Heritage city with far more housing, cafés and cultural life.

Oferta académica

On-campus degrees: Basic Education, Early Childhood Education, Intercultural Bilingual Education, Special Education, Experimental Sciences Education, Arts and Humanities Education, and National and Foreign Languages Education. UNAE also runs a distance professionalisation programme for practising teachers (Basic Education and Intercultural Bilingual Education) and masters programmes in education. Practicum in real schools runs through every year of study, which is the UNAE's main pedagogical selling point.

Vida en el campus

The Chuquipata campus is modern and green but isolated: outside class hours there is little around it. Interparish buses stop at the gate, a taxi from Cuenca costs about USD 12-15 and from Azogues under USD 5. Social life happens in Cuenca. The student body is strongly national, with many Indigenous students in the bilingual programmes.

Intercambios

UNAE regulates inbound mobility (stays of regular or intensive periods, validated by the host faculty and complemented by field visits and project work) and outbound mobility for students who have passed at least two semesters, meet the language requirement and have no debts with the university. No list of current partner universities or annual mobility figures was found. Information pending — contributions welcome.

Admisión

After the mandatory national Registro Nacional, UNAE runs its own process. For the second 2026 semester, registration and application ran 29 June-9 July, followed by a two-hour online exam (27-31 July) scored out of 1,000 with a minimum of 500, covering mathematics, language, culture and identity and vocational interests; bilingual applicants can take parts in Kichwa or Shuar. Results were released on 4 August. Degrees are free under gratuidad (first degree, full load, charges if you fail).

Foreigners need regular migration status (normally the visa de residencia temporal de estudiante, USD 50 + USD 80, with apostilled criminal record and proof of means) and a MINEDEC-homologated secondary diploma. Because the degrees lead to teaching in Ecuador's school system, check whether the qualification is useful in your home country before committing.

Alojamiento

There are no residences, but UNAE publishes a Bolsa de Vivienda — a list of rooms and flats offered by landlords around Azogues, Javier Loyola and Cuenca. Published rents on that list vary and were not consistently stated. Information pending — contributions welcome.

Empleabilidad

UNAE has an Alumni office, and its natural employer is the Ministry of Education through the national teacher-selection process. No employability statistics were found.
