Resumen
Technische Universität München (TUM) is Germany's top-ranked university in the QS World University Rankings 2027 (25th worldwide; first in Germany for a twelfth consecutive year) and the highest-ranked university in the EU in that table. Founded in 1868, it was named a University of Excellence for a fourth time in 2026. As of 1 December 2025 it enrolled 51,954 students, 45% of them international, across 177 degree programmes.
TUM operates several Bavarian campuses: the historic city campus in central Munich, the Garching research hub, Weihenstephan (life sciences, near Freising), plus sites in Heilbronn and Straubing. Munich is prosperous and well connected to the Alps, with employers such as BMW, Siemens and Allianz and a large tech scene. Housing is the main practical constraint.
Oferta académica
TUM covers engineering, natural sciences, life sciences, medicine, management and selected social sciences. The TUM School of Management (AACSB, EQUIS and AMBA) bridges technology and business. Many master's programmes are taught in English; most bachelor's programmes, including Informatics, are taught in German with aptitude assessment. EU/EEA students pay no tuition — only the semester contribution (about €97 in Munich, Garching and Weihenstephan for summer 2026). Newly enrolled non-EU bachelor's students typically pay €2,000 or €3,000 per semester (€4,000–6,000 a year); Informatics is €3,000 per semester. Master's fees are usually €4,000 or €6,000 per semester. Exchange, doctoral and state-examination students are exempt.
Vida en el campus
Student life benefits from Munich's cultural calendar and outdoor access, from Oktoberfest and Christmas markets to the Alps and the Isar. TUM has a large Hochschulgruppen scene covering sports, culture, technology and entrepreneurship. University canteens (Mensen) serve affordable meals, and Garching has a dense student community. Beer gardens, the Pinakotheken and nightlife in Schwabing, Maxvorstadt and Glockenbach are the usual off-campus circuit.
Intercambios
TUM's Erasmus+ network listed about 298 partner universities in 32 countries for 2026/27, with a further 130+ partners on TUMexchange outside Europe. Incoming exchange students apply via their home university; TUM's incoming window is typically mid-March to 10 May for winter and mid-September to 31 October for summer. English-taught options are stronger at master's level. Double-degree routes exist with selected partners. The TUM Global & Alumni Office supports incoming and outgoing students.
Admisión
Bachelor's admission for German-qualified applicants is based on the Abitur and, for many programmes, an aptitude assessment (Eignungsfeststellungsverfahren). Informatics, for example, opens 15 May–15 July for a winter start only. International applicants need an equivalent qualification and often a uni-assist VPD; German-taught bachelor's programmes require proof of German. Master's admission is programme-specific and competitive. Deadlines vary: many master's close around 31 May for winter and mid-January for summer — always check the programme page. TUM does not publish an overall acceptance rate.
Alojamiento
TUM does not run its own halls. Studierendenwerk München Oberbayern offers more than 9,000 rooms in Munich, Freising and Rosenheim, at an average warm rent of about €401/month (June 2026 list: roughly €280–550 depending on hall and room type). Waiting times are typically one to seven semesters. Private WG rooms in Munich are much more expensive. Students often look in Freimann, Moosach or S-Bahn towns. Apply to the Studierendenwerk as soon as you have an offer, and use WG-Gesucht and TUM Living in parallel.
Empleabilidad
TUM's Career Service runs coaching, employer events and the large IKOM fair. UnternehmerTUM is a major European centre for innovation and start-up support; TUM reported 115 start-ups in 2025. Munich's mix of DAX firms (BMW, Siemens, Allianz, Munich Re), large tech campuses and a dense start-up scene gives graduates a strong local labour market. QS 2027 also ranks TUM first in Germany.
