Resumen
KU Leuven (Katholieke Universiteit Leuven) is Belgium's largest and highest-ranked university, and one of the oldest in Europe, founded in 1425. It is ranked 59th in the QS World University Rankings 2027 — its best-ever QS position and first in Belgium — and 46th in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026. With over 64,000 students, about 26% of them international from more than 140 countries, it is the leading research university in Belgium. The university's main campus is in Leuven, a charming student city of about 105,000 residents located just 25 minutes by train from Brussels, with further campuses across Flanders and in Brussels.
Leuven is the quintessential European university town — around 50,000 KU Leuven students study on its Leuven campuses. The Oude Markt (Old Market Square), known as "the longest bar in Europe," exemplifies the student-friendly atmosphere. The city is compact, bikeable, and affordable by Western European standards, making it an excellent destination for international students seeking authentic European student life.
Oferta académica
KU Leuven offers programmes across all major academic disciplines through faculties organised in three groups: Humanities and Social Sciences; Science, Engineering and Technology; and Biomedical Sciences. It is particularly strong in Engineering, Biomedical Sciences, Law, and Theology (one of the oldest theological faculties in the world). The university offers a large number of English-taught Master's and Advanced Master's programmes, plus doctoral programmes. Bachelor's programmes are primarily taught in Dutch, though a few are fully taught in English (such as Philosophy and Engineering Technology), and exchange students can access English-taught courses. The academic approach balances research excellence with practical application, and class sizes in upper years are typically manageable.
Vida en el campus
Student life in Leuven revolves around the university. The city has a dense network of student clubs and faculty associations (kringen) covering academic, cultural, sport, and social interests. Belgian student culture has unique traditions, including elaborate initiation ceremonies (doop) and cantus (formal student drinking songs). The Oude Markt comes alive every evening with students filling terraces and bars. Cultural offerings include the STUK arts centre, 30CC cultural venue, and proximity to Brussels for major events. Belgian beer culture is an integral part of social life.
Intercambios
KU Leuven participates actively in Erasmus+ and counts more than 2,400 educational agreements (university-wide, faculty and programme agreements). It receives more than 2,100 incoming exchange students a year and sends out around 3,500, supported by a well-organised International Office. Exchange students can select from a wide range of English-taught courses, especially at the Master's level. The university also participates in several international networks including LERU (League of European Research Universities) and the Coimbra Group, facilitating exchange and collaboration.
Admisión
Belgian and EU students can generally enrol directly in Bachelor's programmes, though some programmes (Medicine, Dentistry) have entrance exams. International students apply through the KU Leuven online application tool; deadlines vary by programme, but for many English-taught programmes they are 1 March for non-EEA applicants and 1 June for EEA applicants (and non-EEA applicants already living in Belgium with a residence permit), while Dutch-taught programmes have a 1 February deadline for non-EEA applicants. All students start in September — a February intake is generally not possible. Master's admission is competitive and based on academic background, with specific requirements per programme. English proficiency is required for English-taught programmes (requirements vary by programme), and Dutch-taught programmes require proof of Dutch at B2 level or higher. In 2026–2027 the standard tuition fee is €1,181.40 per year (60 credits) for EEA students; non-EEA fees depend on the programme and are set at €3,093, €5,613 or €9,494 per year (the Bachelor of Philosophy, for example, costs €9,493.90 for non-EEA students), so check the official tuition fee calculator. Some non-EEA students qualify for waivers based on residence status or faculty policies.
Alojamiento
KU Leuven manages around 6,000 student housing units in Leuven, and in some residence halls half of the rooms are reserved for international students. In 2026–2027, a room in a KU Leuven Stuvo residence costs €525 or €553 per month all-in (comfort rooms €648–€668, studios €718–€854), with no deposit for rooms. On the private market, a standard room averaged €490–€575 per month in 2025–2026. Apply early for university housing, as places are limited. Leuven is compact enough that most accommodation is within cycling distance of campus. The university housing service provides Kotwijs, a verified listing database to help students find quality private accommodation.
Empleabilidad
KU Leuven's Career Centre offers job fairs, CV coaching, and employer networking events. Faculties and student associations also organise job fairs and company days throughout the year. After graduating, non-EEA students can apply for a 12-month "search year" residence permit to look for work or start a business in Belgium. KU Leuven's strong research reputation (186 spin-offs to date) and Belgian industry connections provide good employment prospects, particularly in pharmaceuticals, engineering, technology, and the EU institutions in nearby Brussels. The alumni network is extensive in Belgium and the Benelux region. Graduates from English-taught programmes often find positions with multinational companies based in Brussels and the wider EU.
