Resumen
"Manila" in student terms almost always means Metro Manila — 16 cities glued together by EDSA, home to about 13–14 million people and the country's densest university cluster. The City of Manila proper (Ermita, Malate, Intramuros, Sampaloc) is only one piece. Quezon City holds UP Diliman and Ateneo; Manila's Taft Avenue holds De La Salle; Sampaloc is the old University Belt around UST.
This is the academic, internship and nightlife centre of the Philippines. English is the classroom language. The cost of a student life can be genuinely low if you live in a dorm or bedspace next to campus; it explodes if you copy an expat in BGC. The tax is traffic, flooding in the monsoon, and heat. Choose your barrio by your university, not by a skyline photo.
Vida estudiantil
Campus culture is strong and ID-gated. UP Diliman is a 493-hectare green campus that behaves like a city of its own (jeepneys, dorms, Sunken Garden, gigs). Ateneo in Katipunan is Jesuit, more enclosed, with a heavy org (student organisation) culture. DLSU on Taft is urban and dense, with Lasallian orgs and a city-campus rhythm. UST in Sampaloc is the classic University Belt — cheap eats, church, and a very Filipino college atmosphere.
Orgs, varsity (UAAP basketball is a national event), org fairs, and "tambay" culture (hanging out) structure the week. Nights out go to Cubao, Poblacion (Makati), BGC, and Malate depending on the crowd. Internships in BPOs, NGOs, media, and corporates in Makati/BGC/Ortigas are a real draw — but only with the right immigration status.
Weekends: Tagaytay, Batangas beaches, Bataan, or a cheap flight to the islands. Inside the city, Intramuros, the CCP complex, and QC's food parks fill the gaps.
Barrios
Katipunan / Loyola Heights, Quezon City (rooms/studios roughly ₱8,000–₱25,000): Ateneo, Miriam College, and a jeepney hop from UP Diliman. The "north university belt". Residential, hillier, calmer. LRT-2 Katipunan station. Best for Ateneo and a reasonable compromise for UP if you cannot get a Diliman dorm.
UP Diliman / Teacher's Village / Sikatuna / Krus na Ligas (dorms and bedspaces ₱4,000–₱15,000; off-campus rooms vary): The UP bubble. OIL Diliman notes the International Center dorm has been under renovation, with Centennial and Acacia Residence Halls taking international students in the meantime; off-campus housing sits right outside the campus. Teacher's Village is the café/nightlife pocket for Iskos and Iskas.
Taft Avenue / Malate, Manila (bedspace ₱4,000–₱8,000; studios ₱9,000–₱18,000+): DLSU, Benilde, St. Scholastica's, UP Manila nearby. Urban, loud (LRT-1 overhead), flood-prone in heavy rain, packed with dorms and carinderias. Walk if you can; Taft traffic is a lifestyle. Choose buildings with 24/7 security and, if you can, elevation.
Sampaloc / España / University Belt (bedspace ₱3,500–₱8,000): UST, FEU, NU. The cheapest full student ecosystem — printing, laundry, review centers, street food. España is busy; treat it like a dense city street after 22:00. LRT-2 via Pureza / V. Mapa.
Intramuros: Walled city, close to some colleges and BI's main office. Atmospheric, limited housing, quiet after hours. Fine for a short stay.
Makati Poblacion / BGC: Nightlife and internships, not student rents. Only if someone else is paying.
Comida y restaurantes
Eat like a student and Manila is one of the cheaper food cities in Asia. Carinderia and university cafeterias: rice + ulam for pocket change. U-Belt and Taft are wall-to-wall with this. Jollibee is a national institution. Mall food courts (SM, Ayala, Robinsons) are the air-conditioned upgrade.
For a sit-down treat: Tomas Morato and Maginhawa (QC) for restaurants, Poblacion for bars and small plates, Binondo for Chinese-Filipino food. Grocery at SM Savemore, Puregold, or wet markets (cheaper produce). Cooking in a bedspace with one burner is a skill; many students simply do not. A realistic food spend is ₱5,000–₱9,000/month on a student pattern, more if you café-hop in BGC.
Tap water: do not drink it. Buy gallons or use the dorm dispenser.
Vida nocturna y ocio
Not a 6am European club city, but not quiet. Poblacion, Makati is the current bar district. BGC is polished and pricey. Cubao (Farmers, Cubao Expo) is more alternative. Malate is older, mixed, close to Taft. UP's own gigs and org nights mean many Diliman students go out without crossing EDSA.
UAAP basketball at the Mall of Asia Arena or Araneta Coliseum is the student sports religion. Concerts land at MOA, Araneta and New Clark. Intramuros and CCP cover the cultural calendar. Karaoke is not a joke — it is a social format.
Grab home after midnight. Jeepneys thin out; walking long stretches of Taft or España with a phone out is how phones disappear.
Transporte
Metro Manila traffic is the defining constraint. Design your life so that home, campus and groceries are in the same city.
- LRT-1 along Taft (DLSU, UN Avenue, Central for Intramuros)
- LRT-2 along Aurora (Katipunan, Cubao, Recto)
- MRT-3 along EDSA (the crowded one — pickpockets at rush hour; bags in front, women-only cars exist)
- Jeepneys and modernised PUVs on every corridor; learn the route names (Katipunan, España, Taft, Cubao–Stop & Shop…)
- UV Express for point-to-point hops
- Beep card for rail; jeepneys are still often cash
- Grab for rain, 22:00+, and when you are lost
A student who lives next to campus spends ₱500–₱2,500/month on transport. A student who commutes across EDSA every day can spend ₱3,000–₱5,000 and hours of life. Airports: NAIA (MNL) is the main one — factor 1–2 hours of traffic; Clark (CRK) is a bus/van trip north.
Coste de vida
Monthly student budget in Metro Manila (2026, excluding tuition):
- Bedspace / boarding house: ₱3,500–₱8,000
- Studio near campus: ₱8,000–₱18,000
- Food: ₱5,000–₱9,000
- Utilities share (incl. aircon risk): ₱1,500–₱4,500
- Transport: ₱500–₱3,000
- Mobile: ₱300–₱800
- Total tight: ₱15,000–₱20,000 (~EUR 200–275)
- Total comfortable: ₱25,000–₱40,000 (~EUR 340–550)
Tuition is the other line: UP Diliman can be modest even for internationals (tuition + EDF); Ateneo ~₱143,500/semester; DLSU ~₱74,000–₱95,000/trimester plus international fee. See the university pages.
Seguridad
Petty crime is the issue: phones on the MRT, bags on jeepneys, snatching on quiet stretches at night. Violent crime against students in Katipunan, Diliman and gated Taft dorms is not the typical story. Flooding and bad electrical wiring in cheap buildings are underestimated risks.
Practical rules: campus IDs get you through gates for a reason; do not fight a jeepney over ₱3; use Grab after a night out; keep a photocopy of your passport and ACR I-Card. Areas to treat with extra care at night include parts of downtown Manila away from the student strips, and any unlit shortcut. Emergency: 911. UST, DLSU, Ateneo and UP all have campus security numbers worth saving.
Clima
Tropical, hot, humid. Daytime 28–33°C most of the year. Dry-ish season December–May (April–May is peak heat). Rainy / typhoon season June–November, with Luzon on the main typhoon belt. Taft and many Manila streets flood; a 30-minute rain can kill a commute. Pack a light rain jacket, quick-dry clothes, and sandals you can live in. Class suspensions for typhoons (Signal numbers) are real — watch PAGASA and your university's Facebook page.
