Overview

The Universidad Estatal Amazónica (UEA) was created by Ley 2002-85 (Registro Oficial 686, 18 October 2002) and markets itself as the largest university in the Ecuadorian Amazon. In the 2024-2025 academic year it had 6,611 undergraduates, of whom 3,279 study online — so the on-campus community in Puyo is closer to 3,000-3,500. It is CACES-accredited (resolution 142-SE-33-CACES-2020; extended in 2025 by resolution 216-SO-29-CACES-2025 until the next national evaluation, which starts from late 2026). In the Webometrics July 2026 edition it sits 43rd among Ecuadorian institutions and 7,166th worldwide; it does not appear in QS or THE.

The main campus is on Vía Napo km 2½ (Paso Lateral), on the edge of Puyo. Puyo is a small, green, rainy Amazon-foothill town at roughly 950 m: warm and humid all year, with frequent downpours. It is a gateway for rafting, waterfalls and Kichwa, Shuar and Waorani communities. Pastaza province recorded only 12 homicides January-August 2026, among the lowest counts in the country; normal petty-crime precautions apply.

Academic programs

Teaching is organised in three faculties: Ciencias de la Vida, Ciencias de la Tierra and Modalidad en Línea. Campus programmes are rooted in the Amazon — Biology, Environmental Engineering, Forestry, Agronomy (Agropecuaria), Agroindustry and Tourism — while the online faculty offers Communication, Economics, Basic and Early Childhood Education, Information Technology, Social Work and Tourism. The UEA also has small sedes in Lago Agrio (Sucumbíos) and El Pangui (Zamora Chinchipe), each teaching Tourism and Biology.

The flagship asset is the CIPCA / CEIPA research station at km 44 of the Puyo-Tena road: about 2,848 ha, of which roughly 2,000 ha are primary forest, with soil, tropical-ecology, biotechnology, medicinal-plant and animal-reproduction labs. Field practice there is part of most life-science degrees.

Campus life

Life is small-town: the campus, the Puyo boulevard along the Pambay river, market food (maito, chontacuro, fruit juices) and weekend trips to Tena, Mera or Baños (about 1.5 hours by bus). Nightlife is limited to a few bars. Expect a very Ecuadorian, mostly regional student body; foreign degree students are rare, so Spanish is essential.

Exchange programs

The Dirección de Cooperación Nacional e Internacional (cooperacion@uea.edu.ec, Bloque D) handles inbound students. The UEA explicitly offers foreign students semester stays, pre-professional internships and undergraduate or postgraduate thesis work in the rainforest, credited by the home university. Past agreements include the Universidad Tecnológica de Pereira (Colombia) and a three-year cooperation with the Universidad de Málaga (Spain). Current partner lists and deadlines are not published in one place — email the office a semester ahead.

Admissions

Since the 2024 reglamento (Acuerdo SENESCYT-2024-0055-AC), each public university runs its own admission after a mandatory national Registro Nacional handled by the Ministry of Education (MINEDEC). For the second 2026 period the UEA ran registration 29 June-10 July, an exam 13 July-7 August and five application/acceptance rounds up to 18 September. Undergraduate study is free under gratuidad (one degree, first enrolment, at least 60% of the credit load); failing subjects triggers fees.

Foreign degree-seekers need a regular migration status and a passport with a valid visa before the Registro Nacional, plus a secondary diploma homologated by MINEDEC. The usual route is the visa de residencia temporal de estudiante from Cancillería (USD 50 application + USD 80 grant, apostilled criminal record, proof of means, admission letter; valid up to two years). Plan early, because the visa and the admission timelines overlap.

Student housing

There are no student residences. Near campus, listings show two-bedroom flats around USD 150-180/month (roughly €130-155) and new furnished mini-suites at about USD 250 (≈€215). Rooms in family homes exist but prices are rarely published. Landlords usually ask for one month's deposit.

Career services

Information pending — contributions welcome. The UEA publishes a pre-professional internship instructivo, and internships are mandatory in every degree, but no dedicated graduate-employment office or employability data was found.
