Overview

Paris is one of the world's top student cities (7th in the QS Best Student Cities 2026 ranking), hosting around 400,000 higher education students. The city offers unparalleled cultural richness, world-class universities (Sorbonne, Sciences Po, PSL), and a lifestyle that's hard to match. However, it comes with a price — Paris is one of Europe's most expensive cities for students, particularly regarding housing.

Despite the costs, the French government heavily subsidizes higher education and offers housing aid (CAF/APL) that can reduce rent by up to €280/month. Combined with the student discounts available at virtually every museum, cinema, and restaurant, Paris becomes more manageable for budget-conscious students.

Student life

The Latin Quarter (5th arrondissement) has been the heart of Parisian student life for centuries. Student culture revolves around long café conversations, museum visits (many are free for EU students under 26), and the vibrant intellectual atmosphere. The city has over 60 universities and grandes écoles.

Student associations organize events, parties, and cultural outings regularly. The French academic system is demanding but rewarding, with a strong emphasis on independent thinking. Learning at least basic French significantly improves the experience, though many master's programs are now offered in English.

Neighborhoods

Oberkampf/Bastille (11th) (€600-850/mo for a room): Young, vibrant, excellent nightlife and dining. Well-connected by metro. Popular with international students.

Belleville (19th-20th) (€500-700/mo): Multicultural, affordable for Paris, great Chinese and North African food. Amazing views from Parc de Belleville.

Le Marais (3rd-4th) (€800-1,100/mo): Beautiful, central, LGBTQ+ friendly. Expensive but an incredible living experience.

Montmartre (18th) (€550-750/mo): Charming, artistic, with stunning views. Can be touristy around Sacré-Cœur but residential parts are lovely.

Batignolles (17th) (€550-750/mo): Residential, calm village-like atmosphere within Paris. Excellent organic market. Good value.

Latin Quarter (5th) (€700-950/mo): The classic student neighborhood. Close to the Sorbonne, bookshops, and Luxembourg Gardens. Premium pricing.

Food & restaurants

French cuisine is legendary but eating out is expensive. Budget strategies: the boulangerie sandwich (€4-6), the "menu du jour" lunch set (€10-14 for starter + main or main + dessert), and cooking at home with market ingredients.

Weekly groceries at Lidl or Franprix cost €40-60. The Marché d'Aligre and Marché Bastille offer great fresh produce. University restaurants (CROUS) serve full meals for €1 for all students — an incredible deal. For cheap eats, explore the Chinese restaurants near Arts et Métiers or the falafel joints on Rue des Rosiers (L'As du Fallafel, €8-12).

Nightlife & entertainment

Parisian nightlife ranges from sophisticated wine bars to underground clubs. The Oberkampf and Bastille areas are the main nightlife hubs. Drinks at bars cost €8-15. Club entry is often €10-20.

Free cultural experiences abound: first Sunday of the month = free museum entry, Nuit Blanche (annual all-night art festival), open-air cinema in summer at La Villette. The Philharmonie offers €10 student tickets. For clubs, check out Rex Club, Concrete, and Le Nouveau Casino.

Transport

Paris has an excellent metro system (16 lines, runs 5:30am-1:15am, later on weekends). Students under 26 can get the Imagine R annual pass for €401.30/year including fees (~€33/month), covering all zones including RER suburban trains.

Without the student pass, the Navigo monthly pass costs €90.80. Single metro tickets are €2.55. Vélib' bike-sharing (V-Plus Jeune, under 27) is €38.64/year. The city is very walkable in the central arrondissements.

Cost of living

Monthly budget for a student in Paris:

Apply for CAF immediately upon arrival — the process takes 2-3 months but is backdated.

Safety

Paris is generally safe but vigilance is needed. Pickpocketing is common in tourist areas (Eiffel Tower, Champs-Élysées, metro lines 1 and 4) and on the RER B to/from CDG airport. Avoid isolated areas at night in northern suburbs.

The Gare du Nord area can feel unsafe after dark. Stay aware in crowded metro stations. Emergency: 112 (general), 15 (medical), 17 (police).

Weather & climate

Paris has an oceanic climate — mild but often grey. Winter (Dec-Feb): 3-7°C, occasional frost. Spring (Mar-May): 8-19°C, lovely. Summer (Jun-Aug): 18-26°C, occasional heatwaves above 35°C. Autumn (Sep-Nov): 8-16°C with rain.

Paris gets about 640mm of rain spread fairly evenly through the year. Pack layers and a good rain jacket. The city is beautiful in every season.
